A blue monkey sub-species thought to be extinct is rediscovered in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Panelists will spotlight this and other primate conservation field learnings.
Washington, D.C., April 5, 2024 – Wild Earth Allies will host a conversation, Local Action, Global Impact: Celebrating Community-Based Conservation, on April 24th at the Cosmos Club in Washington, D.C. The event will feature a panel of distinguished conservationists from Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, including Eugène Rutagarama, CNN Hero and a recipient of both the Goldman Environmental Prize and J. Paul Getty Conservation Prize, and Augustin K. Basabose, Ph.D., primatologist, National Geographic Explorer, and Founder and Executive Director of the Congolese non-profit Primate Expertise. Both have collaborated for decades with Wild Earth Allies to protect wildlife and ecosystems in ways that enhance local livelihoods.
The panel will also include two emerging conservation leaders advancing locally led conservation: Michael Baraka Nyakabeji, Science Coordinator at Primate Expertise, and Joelle Rutagarama, Rwanda Program Manager at Wild Earth Allies.

Mohamed I. Bakarr, Ph.D., Lead Environmental Specialist at the Global Environment Facility, will moderate the panel discussion.
Through an evening of celebration and shared learning, this esteemed group of conservation leaders will share their experiences and insights, spotlighting the importance of community-based actions in solving global biodiversity challenges.
